☾ - It shows that a man and woman can be on equal footing.
They both can hold their own in the world, but when one falls the other rushes to help. They would risk their lives for each other without any second thoughts. She saved him from the jaws of a hollow as well as the dark depths of despair and gave him the power to protect. In return he uses that power to protect his world. He’s saved her from a plot that sought to destroy her as well as help her gain back what she once had, friends and family; he made her feel like she belonged.
They each sacrificed and gave to each other. Ichigo and Rukia are complete equals.
☀ - How they understand each other.
These two have an unbelievable way of communicating. They understand each other like the back of their hands. Words are not needed between these two for one to know if something is wrong with the other.
Rukia has kicked Ichigo back into shape multiple times without him even telling her what was wrong. She knew right away that the hollow inside him was bothering him, and just with one amazing speech, he gained his resolve back.
Ichigo went to Soul Society after Rukia was taken in order to save her. It wasn’t just that he ‘owed’ her, but he knew that she was upset. He knew that she went back to Soul Society against her own will in order to save him. He wanted to save her so she could decide for herself where she wanted to stay.
Because of their understanding for each other, Ichigo and Rukia both know what the other wants.
☾ - How they protect each other.
Both Ichigo and Rukia have the need to ‘unconsciously’ protect each other. No matter what it’s from. And they did just that multiple times throughout the series.
When it was clear that Soul Society wanted to bring Rukia back, even against her own will, she went anyway because she knew that if she didn’t, Ichigo’s life would be at stake. She did her best to hold him back from trying to stop Byakuya and Renji from taking her away, even if it killed her inside to leave him like that. If it was to protect Ichigo, she went willingly.
Besides rescuing (protecting) Rukia from the sokyokou, when going to rescue Orihime in Las Noches, the group came across five different path ways. When Rukia suggested they each take a different path, Ichigo immediately rejected the idea and suggested they stick together. Rukia instantly realizes why he is acting so, as she says, “I didn’t come here just so you could protect me!” There are also other instances where Ichigo feels the need to protect her, such as when she was near dead after her fight with the ninth espada. Despite the fact that Chad was in the same near death situation, he turned right around when he felt Rukia’s reiatsu fade. He had that urge to make sure she was ok as well as protect her right at that moment.
It seems as though Ichigo and Rukia have unconsciously made a promise to protect each other. Because one can not bear without the other.
☀ - The symbolism.
He is the sun, she is the moon. He is the black, she is the white. They are the Blacksun and the Whitemoon. “The rain drags Blacksun down, but the rain dried by Whitemoon.” – they have a small, short poem dedicated to them. A poem that is seen (to IchiRuki shippers) as romantic.
They also contrast and compliment each other (Ichigo’s design was specifically changed to match Rukia’s). Orange hair—black hair, amber (brown) eyes—blue-violet eyes, tall—short. He’s loud and rash while she is observant and calm. Not to mention that Kubo must have put some thought into their birthdays, because Rukia is a Capricorn and Ichigo a Cancer; these two zodiac signs are polar opposites.
Ichigo and Rukia balance each other.
☾ - The “looks”.
They always stare each other in the eyes. It’s like they have some kind of code. Their eyes are always so knowing and passionate. I always feel a happy jump in my chest every time they make full eye contact.
☀ - Their comedic interactions and potential for humor.
Ichigo makes fun of Rukia’s drawings and she hits him. They can be so comical. The way they bicker, for a fan of this pairing, one always says they bicker like a married couple. Sometimes, and most know it, Ichigo goes for it. He makes those snide remarks about her drawings on purpose.
The bickering never gets old. Rukia may hit Ichigo at times, whether it’s because he made fun of her drawings or because he needs a kick in the face to get out of his depressing funk, it’s her way of saying “I care about you.”
☾ - She is his “ray of light.”
“She’s like a ray of light to Ichigo, which makes the name really suit her.” – Kubo Tite
Rukia truly is Ichigo’s “ray of light.” She gave him a whole new meaning to his life. She gave him the power to protect. Something Ichigo stresses throughout the series that he is grateful for. Rukia saved him from despair. When it seemed like everyone had turn their backs on him and that there was no one left he could trust. He was truly drowning in the darkness. But then Rukia came to him and once again she shined her light over him, practically taking him into her arms with that caring smile as she gave him his power back. That same power to protect.
☀ He changed her.
Rukia expressed this in one of the most recent chapters. Ichigo has changed the way she thought about things, such as friendship and family. He taught her that friends and family were more important than anything. She gained that friendship from him and his other friends (Orihime, Uryu, and Chad) and because of him she was able to re-start her friendship with Renji as well as to have a relationship with Byakuya, her adoptive brother. He opened up so many doors for her, doors that she thought were forever locked, only up until she met him. Then she wasn’t so lonely anymore.
☾ - Chapter 423
One of the most angsty, yet most incredible moments Ichigo and Rukia have shared. The way they stare at each other right before Rukia disappears in front of his eyes. Their eyes have such longing and sadness, completely directed at each other. Nothing else around them mattered.
It’s as if they are saying: “I don’t want to part from you, not like this, you mean so much to me.”
☀ - That “Honeymoon” spread
This spread is amazing.
— All in all, this is why I ship IchiRuki.
